communication scholar: Design

We are seeking students to work with our senior designer on the Texas Health Journal (THJ), the electronic health newsletter of The University of Texas System. The Design Intern will be responsible for designing images for the monthly health newsletter, Texas Health Journal, which is produced in mailchimp. He or she will also be responsible for working with the Squarespace-based website, producing web-based visualizations, editing photography, and potentially producing animated graphics as well.

Students may help with other projects of the Office of Health Affairs, including the Texas Collaborative for Healthy Mothers & Babies, the Texas Health Improvement Network (THIN), Healthier Texas, and UT System Wellness.

  • Applicants should have strong design skills, with illustration skills a very significant plus. 

  • Undergraduates are welcome to apply, but should have exceptionally strong ability.

communication scholar: Wordpress Custom Theme Developer

We are looking for an undergraduate or graduate student to work as a back-end developer to templatize a custom designed theme for wordpress for the Texas Health Journal (and other sites, after completion).

You will be working with a front-end designer who provides you the html/css/JS code and your job is to templatize those pages in wordpress. The ultimate goal is the launch of a new website for Texas Health Journal, which is the health newsletter of The University of Texas System. 

Required qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience with WordPress and PHP (a portfolio of similar projects is required)

  • Strong knowledge of front-end (HTML/CSS/JavaScript, Bootstrap, accessibility)

  • Ability to write and maintain custom plugins and themes

  • Ability to provide user friendly site administration, documentation, and guidance to content

    contributors.

  • Strong attention to detail and “pixel perfect”

  • Soft skills to work in a team of designer/developers.


Research Scholar

We are seeking candidates for a part-time graduate research assistant position for spring semester 2019, with an option to extend work through summer and fall semesters. The successful candidate will provide data management and analysis support for projects related to access to healthcare by under-insured women.

Major Responsibilities

  • Cleaning and preparing datasets, including health care claims data, and conducting data analyses

  • Supporting the preparation of reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts

Required education: Current enrollment in a public health degree program (e.g., MPH, PhD or DrPH) with a qualitative emphasis. Applicants should have completed at least two biostatistics courses and one epidemiology course.

Required skills/experience/knowledge: One year of experience in public health research or practice; ability to work in Stata and/or SAS.

Preferred Experience: Experience in women’s health. Experience working with health care claims data. Experience working with large datasets, using either SAS or STATA.
